After you have done the basics, the effort of getting higher is based on the knowledge of the art of linking. You need a combination of better quality, and more incoming links than your competitors have for a given search phrase. To get high for a specific competitive phrase, you need incoming links for that exact phrase.
- This SearchEngineOptimisation.co.nz website has ranked top ten on Google.co.nz for Search Engine Optimisation, but it then did not rank even top 50 for the related phrase "Search Engine Optimization" - even though Google treats the phrases as related.
- This website is/has not been ranking for the other related phrase "SEO".
Specific incoming links are needed to get this website ranked for whatever phrase we would like the site to rank for, especially if it is a competitive phrase.
For phrases that are not that competitive, a powerful website is able to get ranked for a phrase just by having the page properly onpage SEO'ed for the phrase. I call such an effect the midas touch of a powerful website.
